NASK SCIENCE discusses quantum computers development

13.06.2023

Poland has a unique opportunity to become the center of the regional quantum computing ecosystem – is the conclusion of the discussion at the IBM Quantum Networking Reception on June 13, co-organized by the US Embassy in Warsaw. The meeting was attended by Prof. Michał Karpowicz of NASK SCIENCE.

A 2023 Boston Consulting Group report shows that quantum computers at the stage of technological maturity will represent a market worth more than $500 billion. They will cover industries such as aerospace and automotive (process design and optimization), financial services (fraud detection and valuation), energy (network performance optimization and battery design), and public services – such as in the area of disease risk determination and drug development, among others. Quantum computers should already have an important place in organizations’ innovation strategies. Poland could be an important market for the development of these technologies. The country’s innovative potential has been recognized by IBM, among others, as the commercial leader in quantum computing technology.

IBM’s roadmap for the development of quantum computing extends to 2026 and includes, among other things, the further integration of Qiskit with cloud resources (through the use of Qiskit runtime and the introduction of dynamic circuits), the development of algorithms and their adaptation to real-world applications and hardware limitations, the further scaling of the technology through the use of quantum communication between smaller processors, and the integration of error mitigation methods to increase the quality of computation without the need for large-scale error correction.

– The Department of Quantum Computing and Quantum Communication is currently being established at NASK SCIENCE and will be led by Prof. Michał Oszmaniec. Acting on the frontline of science and technology development is one of our strategic goals. – says Michał Karpowicz.
